Golden Sanctuary of the King of Minos 4/4

Writer: Ognjen KaricOgnjen Karic

Back from Crissi our batteries were full for one last adventure on Crete before leaving this paradise. For the end we left the main attraction and that is the Knossos and the palace of the king of Minos. There is a well-known legend about the labyrinth and the minotaur, one of the reasons why I decided to go to Crete. Apart from Theseus and the king of Minos, another ancient legend is connected with Crete, and that is the story of Icarus.

Minos hired an architect from Athens to design his palace. The architect's name was Dedalus and he had a son Icarus. His plan was so well thought out that someone couldn’t get in and out without a guide. Of course, in order to ensure that Dedalus did not reveal the secret palace to someone else, the king had Dedalus and Icarus imprisoned in the tower. Dedalus made wings of wax and feathers for his son to manage to escape the tower, however Icarus flew too close to the sun and ended tragically.

It is very easy to get to the location itself, various modes of transport run daily. Tickets to the site itself were also not expensive. The place is divided into two parts, the first and the second palace.

Knossos was only a myth and legend until 1900, when it was discovered by the British archaeologist Arthur Evans. When the complex interior of the palace itself was discovered, the ancient myth seemed more and more real. Today it is one of the most visited archeological sites in the Mediterranean.

We left Crete, rich in various aspects. We took some of the ancient knowledge and nature beauty with us. Until the next adventure.
