Beautiful town of Hallstatt

Writer: Ognjen KaricOgnjen Karic

One weekend we sat and drank coffee, we where thinking about where could we go next to recharge our batteries a bit. We decided to go to Hallstatt. I have to say right away, that we really weren't disappointed. It was near and it was beautiful.

Hallstatt is an interesting little town with only 850 people living in it. It was created due to salt mining, resources that the inhabitants of this region have been using for centuries. The whole area is named after that. What is interesting is that Hallstatt is the place of the oldest mine in the world. Some scientist say it is 7500 years old, what is more interesting its the fact that it has a salt supply left for the same number of years.

There are many ways to spend time in town. What people do the most are walking around the town, there are city tours. There is a large number of restaurants for people who like to explore new authentic food, lake Hallstatt is also an interesting point, it is possible to rent a boat. People should also visit the Salzwelten mine, the oldest mine in the world. Hallstatt Ossuary, also called Charnel House or the Bone House, is the most unusual spot to visit in Hallstatt. In this small room are over 2100 skulls perfectly stacked along the walls.

The main point of the town is of course the square however not far from square, rises the tower of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary. The church was built in 1505 in the late Gothic Style, but its tower has been preserved from an older church from the 1320s.

We basically visited the whole town, the sites are interesting to look at, the food is not bad and we really rested and recharged our batteries.
